Die University of Melbourne bricht einige Rekorde: Sie ist die zweitgrößte Universität im Bundesstaat Victoria, dank ihrer frühen Gründung im Jahr 1853 die älteste des Staates und damit auch noch die zweitälteste des ganzen Kontinents Australien.

 

Außerdem ist sie Mitglied der „Group of Eight„, der acht führenden Universitäten des Landes. Allein das spricht schon für ein konstant hohes Niveau in Forschung und Lehre. Ihr Motto „Redefine Possible“ spiegelt daher den Anspruch der forschungsstarken Universität, Grenzen zu überschreiten und neue Wege und Möglichkeiten zu entdecken.

Insgesamt besteht die Hochschule aus einer ganzen Reihe von Fakultäten und Graduate Schools, von Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences über Music bis hin zu Business and Economics. Hier kann man verschiedene Abschlüsse wie Bachelor oder Master erlangen oder auch ein Auslandssemester verbringen.

In den renommierten Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 hat es die University of Melbourne zum wiederholten Mal auf den ersten Platz in Australien und den 31. auf der ganzen Welt geschafft. Studienjahr

Das Studienjahr an der University of Melbourne ist in zwei Semester unterteilt.

• Semester 2 2025: 28. Juli 2025 – 21. November 2025

Die University of Melbourne verfügt über insgesamt sieben Standorte in Melbourne und etwas ländlicher gelegen im Bundesstaat Victoria.

Der Hauptcampus befindet sich in Parkville, einem zentral gelegenen Stadtteil Melbournes, nur ein paar Minuten vom Stadtkern entfernt. Auf dem Gelände findet man modern designte Architektur und Austattungen auf dem neuesten Stand in Verbindung mit alten Sandsteingebäuden. Alleine zwölf Bibliotheken stehen den Studenten hier zur Verfügung.

Dann gibt es noch einen Standort der Universität in Southbank in der Stadt, wo sich die Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts sowie das Melbourne Conservatorium of Music befinden. In Burnley, Creswick, Dookie, Shepparton und Werribee sind ebenfalls noch Zweigstellen der University of Melbourne gelegen.

Melbourne liegt mit knapp 5 Millionen Einwohnern im Bundesstaat Victoria, am südöstlichen Zipfel Australiens am Indischen Ozean. Die nach Sydney zweitgrößte Stadt Australiens, die sich um die Port Phillip Bay herumzieht, war bis 2017 mehrere Jahre in Folge die lebenswerteste Stadt der Welt.

Sowohl die Süd- als auch die Ostgrenze des Staates Victoria werden vom Meer gebildet, Victoria verfügt allein über 1 600 km Küstenlinie und liegt in der subtropischen Klimazone. Die Temperaturen sind angenehm, der Februar ist mit 20 °C der wärmste Monat.

Wasserratten und Sonnenanbeter sind hier genauso richtig wie Kulturfreunde. Man kann in seiner Freizeit surfen, schwimmen oder sich in der Innenstadt umschauen, beispielsweise im Melbourne Exhibition Centre oder im Victorian Arts Centre. Das eigentliche Zentrum mit fast allen Sehenswürdigkeiten konzentriert sich übrigens auf nur einen Quadratkilometer. Danach sollte man unbedingt in einem der 3500 Restaurants essen gehen, denn Melbourne gilt auch als die Stadt des Essens in Australien. Anschließend lädt das lebendige Nachtleben mit seinen Nightclubs, Bars und Pubs zum Feiern ein.

An der University of Melbourne kann innerhalb von zwei Jahren ein Associate in Urban Horticulture erlangt werden, und zwar mit der Schwerpunktsetzung Environmental Horticulture. Der Abschluss befähigt die Teilnehmer zu einem Beruf im Gartenbau.

Der Studiengang wird auf dem Burnley Campus gelehrt, der viele Gärten und Übungsumgebungen zu bieten hat. Wer nicht direkt in den Beruf wechseln möchte, kann anschließend auch nahtlos zum Bachelor of Environments übergehen und nach weiterem Studium einen akademischen Abschluss erlangen, denn der Associateabschluss alleine wird in Deutschland nicht anerkannt.

An der University of Melbourne können Studenten ein Aufbaustudium im Postgraduate-Bereich absolvieren, das mit einem Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma oder Specialist Certificate abgeschlossen wird. Dabei dauern die Certificates bis auf einige Ausnahmen meistens ein halbes Jahr, die Diplomas ein ganzes Jahr.

In Deutschland werden die Abschlüsse nicht als akademische Abschlüsse anerkannt, so dass man sie hauptsächlich als Weiterbildung nutzen sollte.
